How to use the FAQs

Please read the following before editing this page:
  • If you have a general question about this course or about the subject matter, and you think that posting the question and getting an answer would be helpful to your fellow students, post it below (see the example first question).
  • If someone has posted a question, and you believe that you have the answer, post your answer in response to the question (see the example answer below).
  • If someone has answered a question, but you believe that you have further helpful information that you'd wish to share with others, edit the answer or add it to the answer.
  • If you want to discuss either a question or its answer before posting it here, go to the bottom of this page and start a new discussion thread.
  • If you have a query relating to some specific page of this wiki or some very specific part of the course, and you're not sure whether it's significant enough to post here as a FAQ, first consider posting it as a new discussion thread on the relevant page.

Academic questions

Q: I have a general question about the content | scheduling | assessment of this module--whom do I ask?
A: You should post your question here--it will be answered.

Q: What would I have to do to achieve an A grade in this module?
A: This is a question I'm frequently asked by students, and there really is no easy answer other than "Deliver A-grade quality work" ... because the question is really much more about quality than about marks. The first thing I'd suggest is that you very carefully read and digest the Assessment spec, since this gives the clearest guidance on what I expect deliverables to look like in terms of both structure and type of content, and how I allocate marks to it. The second thing I'd suggest is that, for initial inspiration, you look through the examples of good e-heritage projects that I've included in each of the syllabus chapters--you might like, as a helpful exercise in helping you understand what a good project looks like, to take one such project and, in note form, map it into the marking criteria published on the Assessment page. Beyond that, the things I particularly look for are:
  • innovative projects that demonstrate appropriate marrying of content to technologies (i.e., the focus must not be on the content per se but on how the content is appropriately and imaginatively exhibited within an e-culture framework)
  • evidence that you have really thought through your proposal properly, viz:
    • that your project is clearly and tightly focused on a quite specific and well-defined topic, with clearly specified goals and intended outcomes. By 'topic', I mean more than simply choice of content, more than whatever cultural or historical subject it is about; more importantly, I mean that as specifically an e-heritage project it has both focus and purpose
    • that the subject matter is relevant to the module and that you're able to clearly and cogently argue its relevance, that the proposed project is feasible in respect of acquisition of content (you need to demonstrate that you know exactly where your content will come from and how you will acquire it)
    • that you have given thoughtful consideration to IPR issues, that you have absolute certainty that you can acquire adequate content for your prototype without infringing the copyright of others or falling foul of copyright legislation, and that you will have measures in place to ensure the rights of any third parties (end-users, for example) who contribute content to your site
  • thoughtful discussions of theoretical, intellectual, and technical issues that demonstrate that you've read (and can cite) supporting documents addressing the issues you're concerned with
  • clear, error-free writing: since I expect you to consider your prototype as the foundations of a real project rather than a mere academic exercise, I therefore also expect the highest standards of professionalism in its presentation. Consequently marks will always be lost for vague or woolly writing, for poor spelling, for poor punctuation, for poor grammar, and in general for any indications in your implementation and your report that you have not shown sufficient care and attention to presentation.

Technical and administrative questions

Q: I have a general technical question relating to hardware or software I hope to use in my implementation--whom do I ask?
A: You should post your question here--it will be answered.

Q: I want to use Joomla! (or Drupal, or Plone ...) How do I install it?
A: You really shouldn't be asking me questions for which you should be capable of finding answers for yourself. However I'm frequently asked for help in installing and configuring content management systems such as Joomla and Drupal. This FAQ page is not the place to post detailed instructions which, in any case, you'll find either on the CMS web site and / or in a 'readme' file in the downloaded package. The purpose of this short answer is simply to recommend the sequence of steps you'll probably need to take--whether installing on your own or on a 3rd party server. Every package is different; the following assumes a [X|L|W|M]AMP (Apache+mysql+PHP) package such as Joomla, so if you're using a package based on other languages (e.g. Python or Perl) you'll need to read this in tandem with the specific documentation:
  • first, do nothing more at all until you have read and understood the system requirements. If you're required to edit plain text files (config files, for example), then make sure you know how to edit and set permissions on text files; if you need special software (Ant, Maven, Tomcat, or whatever else) installed, then ensure that you have downloaded that software before you begin. If you have strong doubts about your technical ability to install and configure a package, consider using a different package.
  • if not already installed, then install Apache
  • enable Apache and test it with "http://localhost"
  • install PHP & MySQL, then test the installation by creating and loading a text file (name it, for example, test.php) containing just the following line: <?php phpinfo() ?>
  • download and install either phpmyadmin or another database GUI, and use it to create a database for Joomla
  • install Joomla
If any one of those steps fails, fix it before moving on to the next step.

Q: Does the university have video recording equipment that I can borrow?
A: The library has a few Mini DV Camcorders that you can borrow (book in advance) from a Wednesday and returned on the following Tuesday. Be warned there is a £10 fine per day if it’s returned late.
